Air Quality Engineer
These highly skilled, trained specialists apply their expertise of engineering principles to perform a variety of practices used in air pollution analysis and control, including physics, chemistry, mathematics, elementary thermodynamics, natural sciences and meteorology, research methods, methods of statistical analysis, and the principles and methods of measuring atmospheric conditions and pollution levels. Air quality engineers also study and document the chemical and physical characteristics of air impurities and their interactions with the environment.
In the construction field, air quality engineers may perform source testing, including scheduling and observing emissions tests and sampling in the field, designing and reviewing source test plans, making compliance determinations and maintaining the source test database. A substantial amount of their work is performed in the field.
Air quality engineers may be called out to construction projects to independently perform or lead detailed air quality projects and/or environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and work with state and federal air permitting requirements.
These engineers may also provide environmental regulatory program analysis and conduct all aspects of air quality permitting for major and minor sources. In doing so, they often need to apply their knowledge of air toxics, litigation support, ambient air monitoring, emissions testing, continuous emissions monitoring systems and environmental data analysis, as well as Title V permits and Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) and New Source Review (NSR) permits.
