Carbon Market Assessment

and Management

At Sequence, we have witnessed the brisk growth in carbon market assessments and management.  Throughout this time, we have been in the forefront recruiting the most highly skilled and trained climate change and carbon market professionals on behalf of our clients who are exerting leadership developing:

• carbon market assessments and analysis
• carbon market strategies
• carbon credit projects

Our placements are leading the efforts of prestigious consulting firms, major organizations, multinational corporations, and governments globally in aligning climate change strategies with their core commercial objectives, whether it be locally, regionally, nationally or worldwide.

They are often redefining the way organizations are developing their emissions trading and carbon offsets procurement strategies, viewing market analyses in support of low carbon technology firms, and interpreting carbon market implications of government and international policy developments.  They are the experts capable of aiding decision-makers with assessing financial risks associated with current and potential future carbon constraints.

Today, more businesses than ever are voluntarily offsetting their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (carbon) which has had a positive effect in encouraging others to follow suit.  The voluntary carbon market is seeing more organizations going carbon neutral, more carbon free products introduced in the marketplace, and more service providers created, especially in the U.S. and the U.K. Consequently, many new labels, standards and GHG registries have recently been launched; creating greater diversification of carbon offset prices.  This has resulted in offset buyers and sellers facing a more complex, unregulated, and non-transparent market rife with risks and uncertainties.

We recruit for carbon strategies and market analysis.

The team at Sequence supports an array of carbon strategies and market analysis activities and initiatives for our clients through our professional recruitment and placement of highly capable staff, management and executive level personnel.  We are well versed in all facets and undertakings of the climate change profession.
In fact, we have been at the vanguard recruiting experts capable of understanding the uncertainties and implications associated with climate change policy, including the:

• evolution of carbon policy in different jurisdictions
• price of CO2 in the fragmented carbon markets
• paths by which low-carbon technologies will emerge
• economic costs of climate change policy on supply chains
• costs of emission abatement options

Our placements have focused on the ongoing development of carbon strategies, research and policy, and market analysis related to GHG emissions and carbon credits.  As a result, many of our clients are internationally recognized for their leadership in:

• carbon management strategy and implementation
• multi-regional carbon trading and offsetting consulting
• climate change opportunity analysis

In addition, we have worked closely with clients in support of their efforts related to the three market-based mechanisms outlined by the Kyoto Protocol:

• emission trading (ET)
• joint implementation (JI)
• clean development mechanism (CDM)

To assist the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in achieving their national emission reduction targets, the Kyoto Protocol provides a degree of flexibility through the three market-based mechanisms.  While all three strive to reach the Kyoto Protocol’s goal, the CDM is the most focused on encouraging involvement of developing countries.

The Clean Development Mechanism

The CDM also provides the opportunity for industrialized countries with a greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction commitment to invest in emission-reducing projects in developing countries in return for carbon credits that can be applied to meeting their own emissions targets. As such, the CDM is meant to benefit both industrial and developing countries.

For industrial countries, the CDM provides access to emission reduction credits based on GHG abatement projects undertaken in developing countries where the costs of reducing emissions might be considerably lower than the costs of comparable reductions at home.  The CDM provides developing countries with opportunities to become active participants in international efforts to curb GHG emissions and provides a vehicle through which investment flows and the transfer of climate friendly technologies can take place.

It also sets aside a portion of the proceeds from qualifying projects to pay administrative costs and help those developing countries that are the most vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change cope with the costs of adaptation.

Clean Development Mechanism/Joint Implementation

At Sequence, we have diligently supported an array of carbon credit strategies and initiatives for our clients through recruitment and placement of highly capable staff, management and executive level personnel.  We are highly experienced recruiting and placing experts that enable our clients to undertake:

• CDM/JI market assessment studies
• Provide critical support throughout the project life style
• Bring emission reduction credits to the market

The personnel we have placed have been instrumental helping companies face the challenging task of meeting GHG reduction obligations, in which there are two basic choices: offset or reduce their GHG emissions.  For companies that may not be able to directly reduce their own emissions cost effectively, offset markets allow the purchase of carbon credits for GHG reductions being accomplished elsewhere.

For example, a company with emissive equipment that has not yet reached the end of its useful life may choose to undertake offset projects rather than replace equipment early. Offset projects may include carbon sequestration in forests and agricultural lands, gas recovery, landfill methane collection and destruction, forestation, improved agricultural practices, renewable energy facilities, and many other approaches.

Alternatively, companies can choose to make direct GHG emission reductions in their own facilities in order to earn carbon credits. These credits can be obtained by undertaking a wide range of activities, including improving energy efficiency, detecting and repairing leaks, upgrading technologies, and replacing emissive technologies.

Sequence has recruited and placed experts in many parts of the world that are well acquainted with many Designated National Authorities (DNA) in countries with high CDM/JI potential, and who can provide the skill set to assist in the identification and development of carbon credit strategies.  Today, our efforts have enabled our clients to develop demonstrated capabilities for preparing project design documents (PDD), baseline studies, and designing monitoring and verification protocols (MVP) for CDM projects.

Many have developed critical tools to address and quantify the risks associated with CDM projects and calculate the price of carbon.  Among the purposes of these new tools are to help manage GHG emissions, create inventories, estimate the price of carbon, and assess CDM projects.  The professionals we have successfully recruited are highly experienced working with the latest tools and models in the industry, and are well versed in all aspects of the carbon life cycle, from emissions modeling to project investment, and from carbon pricing to risk management.

In addition to the reduction of GHGs controlled by the Kyoto Protocol, they are active in the reduction of emissions of ozone-depleting substances controlled under the Montreal Protocol and their alternatives that contribute to global climate change.
