Corrosion Engineer
Corrosion engineers work to prevent and control the destructive effects of corrosion, which strikes a vast variety of industries and manufacturing areas, from chemical processing and water systems, to transportation and infrastructure protection. They are employed in the petroleum, transportation, maritime, power generation and defense industries, among others.
These specialists study the science behind corrosion - the destruction of metal by chemical or electrochemical action - and then design and implement safe and economic ways to combat its negative effects. For example, their work prolongs the life of most structures, such as bridges, highways and pipelines, as well as smaller devices used outdoors.
General approaches to controlling corrosion include lowering the metal’s corrosion potential through "cathodic protection," using chemicals to inhibit corrosion and applying protective coatings to limit exposure to corrosion.
Corrosion engineers also may recommend building materials based on their corrosion-resistant qualities and other factors, such as cost, availability, reliability and appearance.
