Environmental Remediation
This field is concerned with the removal of pollution or contaminants from environmental media such as soil, groundwater, sediment or surface water for the general protection of human health and the environment or from a brownfield site intended for redevelopment.
Remediation is subject to an array of state and federal government regulatory requirements and can also be based on assessments of human health and ecological risks where no legislated standards exist or where standards are only advisory.
In order to accomplish the remediation of an area there must be communication between all parties: community, company, contractors and government officials. This area also requires special knowledge of the investigation of petroleum hydrocarbon leaking underground tank sites, chlorinated solvents, Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (DNAPLS), metals and radioactive materials, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), as well as operation and maintenance of treatment systems.
