Geologist
Geologists are scientists who study the solid and liquid matter that makes up the earth and terrestrial planets. They study the composition, processes and history of the earth to try to find out how rocks were formed and what has happened to them since their formation. They also study the evolution of life by analyzing plant and animal fossils.
Geology is an interdisciplinary subject that overlaps and depends on other scientific disciplines. Physical geology is concerned primarily with the earth's materials (minerals, rocks, soils, water, ice, and so forth) and the processes of their origin and alteration. Chemistry and physics are the two scientific disciplines most closely related--study of the chemistry of the earth's materials is geochemistry, and study of the physical properties of the earth is geophysics.
The construction world may seek a geologist or geotechnical engineer to evaluate the stability of a construction site's rocky slope or the best way to excavate a new mine shaft. Professional advice may also be sought for geological hazards to construction, such as sinkholes and landslides.
