This area, also known as petroleum geology, deals with finding new sources of hydrocarbon deposits beneath the earth's surface.  Since oil and natural gas account for about three-fifths of our energy needs, fueling our homes, workplaces, factories and transportation systems makes it especially important to find and develop new sources. Sophisticated equipment and advances in computer technology have greatly increased the productivity of exploration.
