Volcanologist
Volcanologists investigate volcanoes and volcanic phenomena to try to predict the potential for future eruptions and hazards to human health and welfare. They take samples of gases trapped beneath the surface of a volcano’s hardened lava and then analyze them to predict the activities of the volcano.
Though they also study dormant volcanoes, volcanologists often travel to recent, hard-to-reach eruptions. The more recent the eruption is, the more information the samples may yield.
Like other geoscientists, volcanologists use sophisticated instruments – in their case, a special thermometer called a thermocouples – and computers to study the composition, structure and other physical aspects of the earth, particularly its geologic past and present.
A volcanologist’s equipment also includes a face mask to avoid toxic fumes and a metal metal shield to protect against heat.
