Construction Surveyor
Construction surveying is generally performed by specialized technicians. Unlike licensed land surveyors, the resulting plan does not have legal status. These surveyors survey the existing conditions of the future work site, including topography, buildings and infrastructure, including underground infrastructure whenever possible.
Construction surveying, otherwise known as "layout" or "setting-out," also entails staking reference points and markers that will guide the construction of new structures, such as roads or buildings. The surveyors also verify the location of structures during construction. As-Built surveying is a survey conducted at the end of the construction project to verify that the work authorized was completed to the specifications set on plans.
Surveying techniques have existed throughout much of recorded history. In ancient Egypt, when the Nile River overflowed its banks and washed out farm boundaries, boundaries were re-established by a rope stretcher, or surveyor, through the application of fundamental geometry. The nearly perfect square and north-south orientation of the Great Pyramid of Giza, built c. 2700 B.C., affirm the Egyptians’ command of surveying.
Historically, distances were measured using a variety of means, such as chains with links of a known length. For instance, Gunter’s chains - measuring tapes made of steel or "invar," a nickel steel alloy - were pulled taut to measure horizontal distances.
Horizontal angles were first measured using a compass, which provided a magnetic bearing, from which deflections could be measured. Later, more carefully scribed discs provided better angular resolution, and mounting telescopes with "reticles" gave more precise sighting atop the disc. Levels and calibrated circles were added to measure vertical angles.
To measure height for surveying, precise levels and a variety of other means have been developed. Levels are calibrated to provide a precise plane from which differentials in height between the instrument and the point in question can be measured, typically through the use of a vertical measuring rod.
